Manhattan is a borough of New York City , New York , USA , coterminous with New York County . Although its 2000 population of 1,537,195 is only third largest of the five boroughs after Brooklyn (2000 population of 2,465,326) and Queens (2,229,379) [1] it is the most densely populated county in the United States . [2] If all five boroughs were independent cities, Manhattan would rank as the sixth most populous city in the United States, behind Los Angeles , Chicago , Brooklyn, Queens, and Houston . The Island of Manhattan is the largest section of the borough and county, which also includes several smaller islands and a small section of the mainland adjacent to the Bronx.
A commercial, financial, and cultural center of the city, Manhattan has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums and universities. It is also home to the headquarters of the United Nations and the seat of city government. Historically, its commercial streets have been characterized by diverse and vibrant activity, though a more recent influx of national chains has led to creeping homogenization. Yet Manhattan still has the largest central business district in the United States and is the site of most of the city's corporate headquarters, as well as both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ .
The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson 's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). [3] A 1610 map depicts the name Manahata twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the Hudson River ). The word "Manhattan" has been translated as "island of many hills" from the Lenape language . [4]
